Located in the ancient capital city of Mdina, the Xara Palace is just 30 minutes’ drive from Malta’s airport. Dating from the 17th century, the palace has been meticulously restored and is a member of Relais & Châteaux with a wonderfully atmospheric location just a few metres from the main entrance of the walled city. There are just 17 bedrooms furnished with original antiques and adorned with Maltese and international artwork. Some of the suites have their own private terraces with outdoor jacuzzis that have outstanding panoramic views over the city and the countryside. The ‘De Mondion’ rooftop restaurant (closed Sundays) is one of the best on the island. Informal dining is offered at the hotel’s trattoria-style restaurant with tables available outside in the quiet square. In the summer months the hotel offers free access to a large swimming pool at the Xara Lodge (five minutes’ driving by complimentary shuttle). We thoroughly recommend a stay at the Xara Palace, even if just for a few nights as part of a two-centre holiday – its sense of history and its unique setting leave a lasting impression on all those who visit.
