Short Break
The resurgent neighbourhood of Karaköy was, until the early 20th century, the home of many palatial Ottoman bank headquarters, before being deserted when the modern Republic was formed. One of these grand properties has been converted into a stylish modern hotel.
The 63 spacious bedrooms showcase the high ceilings and parquet floors of the original bank headquarters, with marble bathrooms and contemporary touches combining to great effect. Some rooms enjoy views of the Golden Horn. Bedecked in marble with a mixture of classic and modern local art, the lobby bar and Turkish-European restaurant serve fashionable locals and visitors throughout the day. Two of the original vaults from which the name is taken are still in use, including one as an impressive underground wine cellar. Also on the lower floor, the spa includes steam room, sauna and hammam (booking required) for the full Turkish experience.
The district of Karaköy is now one of Istanbul's most vibrant neighbourhoods, with a wide selection of excellent bars and restaurants. The historic centre of Sultanahmet, with the Haghia Sofia and Blue Mosque, is across the Golden Horn: about 40 minutes on foot or 20 minutes by taxi or tram.
