The Old Cataract Hotel and the surrounding area inspired Agatha Christie’s novel, ‘Death on the Nile.’ It opened in 1899 and is set in gardens at the end of the corniche overlooking the Nile and the legendary Elephantine Island. Victorian colonial architecture combines splendidly with oriental décor to give the feel of a bygone age. There are a selection of bars and restaurants to choose from including the atmospheric piano bar, the Terrace famous for its afternoon tea or cocktails as the sun goes down over the river and the á la carte ‘1902’ restaurant which serves fine French cuisine. There is an outdoor infinity pool overlooking the river and a spa with indoor pool, hammam and treatment rooms. The 138 spacious bedrooms are either located in the more traditional Palace wing or the more modern Nile wing, where rooms have stunning views of the Nile.
