Dating from the 17th century, the Doelen is one of the oldest hotels in Amsterdam and stands in a central location where the Kloveniersburgwal canal meets the Amstel River. The property was revitalised in 2016 with a complete renovation pairing a clean, modern aesthetic with the delicate original features of the building. Thanks to large windows, the 81 bedrooms are filled with light and the décor is a palette of subtle tones with accents of red and gold – some enjoy picturesque canal views. Perhaps the best view is from the breakfast room and ‘Omber’ restaurant which overlooks the Amstel River. Rembrandt’s ‘The Night Watch’ was first hung in this building; today you need only walk for 15 minutes to view it at the wonderful Rijksmuseum.
