Originally built as a commercial vessel to carry cargoes of sand, grain and wine, Athos now carries up to ten passengers – as well as a certain quantity of wine – in comfort on the Canal du Midi in southern France.The barge is air-conditioned throughout and the five bright staterooms, each with a modern en-suite shower room, can be in either twin or queen-size double bed configuration.
Lunch is usually enjoyed on the spacious sundeck, with an adjustable canopy for shade, and there is a cosy saloon in which to relax or enjoy an aperitif before dinner served at the elegant dining table. During the day you can either take one of the on-board bicycles for a gentle ride along the towpath to the nearest boulangerie, or relax in a deckchair and enjoy slowly-passing Languedoc countryside.
