The town of Vila Real de Santo António is situated on the banks of the River Guadiana which separates Portugal and Spain and has a completely different atmosphere from the busy tourist resorts to the west of Faro. With a precise matrix of streets around a large, central square, the town has a variety of 18th century architecture, a good choice of restaurants serving freshly caught fish and a pretty promenade. San António beach, often deserted, is a few minutes’ drive away, as is Castro Marim with its mediaeval castle and ancient salt pans. The immaculately restored Grand House, overlooking the marina, opened in 2018 and offers outstanding service and Belle Époque design capturing the spirit of the ‘Roaring Twenties’, with its mix of colonial furnishings, antiques and nautical themes. The 31 light-filled bedrooms have an array of period details including intricate mouldings and crystal chandeliers. The restaurant is exceptional and offers exquisite regional cuisine. Lighter dishes are served at the contemporary ‘Grand Beach Club’ (a five minute drive by complimentary shuttle) where you will also find a swimming pool and a sun deck overlooking a small beach. Highly recommended.
