Crossing the plains of La Mancha and the mountains of Aragon between Madrid and Barcelona, this route passes through windmill-dotted ‘Don Quixote’ country. This is a sparsely-populated but dramatically-beautiful region of Spain, which offers wide open skies, rugged castles and forts, and a fascinating history as a once-independent kingdom of its own.
The region also offers several of the most wonderful Paradors in Spain, and a self-driving itinerary will take you to a magnificent restored fortress in Sigüenza (named for the abundant local stork population), an Islamic Mudejar palace in historic Teruel and a splendid Aragonese castle, complete with gothic wall paintings, in Alcañiz.
Aragon, Spain
Teruel’s old quarter of Albarracin is an ancient city of Moorish architecture and cobbled streets which has inspired many works of art, theatre and literature, including the famous Lovers of Teruel. The Parador is a grand palace with simply furnished spacious rooms, and surrounded by pleasant gardens where you will find the outdoor swimming pool and tennis court.
Aragon, Spain
This impressive building, half castle and half convent, dates in part from the 12th century, and is sits at the summit of the Cerro Pui Pinos, overlooking the countryside. Guests can enjoy breakfast in the Romanesque cloisters, a glass of wine in the patio of the old palace or a walk through its tranquil gardens.
