Çanakkale Martyrs' Memorial
The focus of this tour in the company of military historian Richard Goldsbrough is Gallipoli, where the Allies suffered a catastrophic defeat in a failed operation to wrest control of the crucially strategic straits of the Dardanelles from the Ottoman Army and its German allies. The Gallipoli Campaign lasted for nine months, between April 1915 and January 1916, during which time the combined casualties amounted to more than half a million men, fighting for control of a body of water less than a mile wide at points. It is an extraordinarily evocative region of dramatic coastline, pine forests and sandy beaches, where the history is clearly visible in the many memorials, intact trenches and well-preserved fortifications.
