Tromsø, the gateway to Norway’s Arctic North, is one of the largest cities north of the Arctic Circle, and an excellent base from which to sight the aurora during the winter months. The effects of the Gulf Stream mean that despite its extreme latitude, Tromsø is milder that some visitors might expect, with temperatures similar to those in Oslo much of the year, often little below zero in winter.

With a history dating back millennia, the city has a number of wooden houses dating from the late 18th and 19th centuries, as well as striking modern additions including the impressive Tromsø Bridge and the distinctive Arctic Cathedral.
