With the distant Alps as a backdrop, the city seems to owe more to Austria than Germany, and this itinerary will take you onwards by efficient first-class trains, first to Salzburg – Mozart’s birthplace and a well-preserved medieval town – and then to Vienna, to one-time capital of the great Habsburg Empire.
