The fortified wines known to the British as sherry, are produced in a triangular area of Andalucia, between Jerez de la Frontera, Sanlúcar de Barrameda, and El Puerto de Santa María. This has been a winemaking region for centuries and the unique production methods that distinguish sherry evolved through the influence of the Phoenicians, Romans, Moors and Spanish rulers. In the company of wine expert Jonathan Ray, we will uncover the extraordinary diversity of Fino, Manzanilla, Oloroso and Amontillado, as well as enjoying the best of this region’s delicious local cuisine. Jerez itself is a charming and authentic Andalucian city, far less visited than most, and we will also enjoy its atmospheric streets with remarkable baroque architecture. There will also be time to indulge two other local passions as we meet the famous Andalusian horses at the Royal School of Equestrian Art and experience a flamenco performance in a traditional tabanco bar.
The Rock of Gibraltar is a unique geographical and political anomaly, marking the entrance to the Mediterranean for millennia and housing a fascinating warren of tunnels and caves which have been used as a fortress, warehouse, hospital and much more besides. For those who would like to include a two-night stay at the historic Rock Hotel in Gibraltar at the end of the tour, speak to a Kirker expert for more information.
