Iron Bridge. River Severn, Shropshire.
With a network which once extended more than 150 miles, the Birmingham Canal Navigations could have rightly claimed a greater number of canals than Venice. Most of the canals were built between 1770 1830 and they carried up to 8.5 million tonnes of cargo each year, connecting manufacturers and heavy industry with goods and raw materials. In the company of waterways expert Roger Butler, we will visit key sites which helped put Birmingham and the Black Country at the heart of the Industrial Revolution. From our base in Birmingham city centre, we will also visit fascinating locations in Dudley, Warwick, Stratford-upon-Avon and further afield, with several boat trips on the waterways.
