Despite its wonderful unspoiled landscapes and fascinating ancient history, Basilicata remains one of the most undiscovered and authentic regions of Italy. Fly to Bari on the east coast and drive inland to Matera (45 minutes), a UNESCO World Heritage site and European Capital of Culture for 2019, thought to be one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. A scenic three-hour drive south west through the Appenine Mountains takes you to the beautiful hillside town of Maratea – the ‘Pearl of the Tyrrhenian’ and the perfect base to explore pristine coastal scenery. The drive from here to Naples airport takes two and a halfhours – you might wish to stop at themagnificent Ancient Greek temples at Paestum.
Matera, Italy
The Sextantio hotel is located in the oldest part of the Sassi quarters, overlooking the spectacular Murgia park and its rock-hewn churches. The hotel comprises 18 caves and an ancient church, now used as a bar and breakfast room, spread over different levels which have been renovated in full respect of the local heritage.
Maratea, Italy
This restored 18th-century convent is in the heart of Maratea and is framed by the terracotta roofs of the old mediaeval village. It was originally occupied by the Visitandine nuns and the many historical features that remain make a fascinating contrast with the contemporary art that has been collected by the owners.
