The city of Toledo is now one of the most important centres of European mediaeval history and has some outstanding architecture of the period which has been beautifully presented. This was the home of El Greco and much of his work is on display in the city’s museums and churches. We recommend a midweek stay when you are more likely to avoid the crowds and see the city at its most atmospheric. Toledo is thirty minutes by train from Madrid.

Set on the hillside facing the old town of Toledo, the Parador is a modern building, but designed in a sympathetic Mudejar architectural style. A short taxi ride, or about 45 minutes’ walk from the historic city centre, it offers a convenient base for exploring Toledo and the surrounding region
This elegant hotel is located just 300 metres from the cathedral. It is a Renaissance building and was the palace of the Empress Eugenia de Montijo, the wife of Napoleon III.
