This World Heritage City is one of the most important Roman sites in Iberia, with a Roman theatre which is over 2,000 years old and is still in use. Visit the city in the summer to see it in all its splendour with the June, “Emerita Lvdica” festival and in July and August, the International Classical Theatre Festival. Beyond the impressive theatre you will also find the Temple of Diana, Arch of Trajan, the Roman bridge, the Roman circus and the Milagros Aqueduct, as well as the essential National Museum of Roman Art. Just 30km from Mérida itself is Alange, where you can relax in thermal baths founded by the Romans, whilst nearby is the Prosperpina reservoir, built by the Romans.

One of the first Paradors to be established, the Parador de Mérida is a Baroque monastery founded on Roman ruins. In the centre of the ancient Roman city of Mérida, the whitewashed façade reveals 82 rooms, simply but elegantly furnished.
Traverse one of Spain’s most undiscovered regions and stay in three atmospheric and historic Paradors. Extremadura is a vast province with an ancient history, but it is home to only 2% of the Spanish population, and inhabited instead by among Europe’s richest concentrations of birds-of-prey.
