The Douro river cuts a narrow, winding gorge through this beautiful region of northern Portugal. Rolling hills, a tumble of precipitous terraces, port wine lodges and rural communities all combine to provide some of the most unspoilt and unusual scenery in Europe. The entire Douro Valley is listed as a World Heritage Site and is one of the oldest wine producing regions in the world. Recommended as a relaxing holiday destination, it makes an excellent twin-centre with Oporto which is easily reached by car, boat or train.

Located in the heart of the Douro Valley, 90 minutes’ drive from Porto airport and opened in July 2015, this is Europe’s first Six Senses resort. The original 19th century manor house has been upgraded and extended into one of the country’s most stylish and contemporary properties, spread over 19 acres.
The small, unspoilt town of Pinhao is in the heart of the wine-growing countryside, a scenic two hour drive from Oporto. It can also be reached using the Douro railway line that runs alongside the river. Located in the town, The Vintage House is a charming hotel that sits in gardens surrounded by famous vineyards.
We are delighted to include this charming property, located on the quieter northern side of the Douro River. It can be reached in under two hours by car from Porto or alternatively by train to Ferrao from where the hotel will provide complimentary transfers up the hill to the property.
At the mouth of the Douro River, Oporto is the gateway to the dramatic valley which stretches as far as the plains of Castille and is home to acres of vines from which Oporto's famous eponymous wine is produced.
