As they go about their business, Romans are possessively proud of their historic city which has an unforgettable majesty, rich with the relics of 2,000 years of history. It retains many buildings and monuments from the Republic and Empire, some in amazingly good order, such as the Pantheon and the Colosseum. Rome is also a great treasure house of Baroque architecture containing masterworks by Bernini, Borromini and da Cortona. The sheer volume of art, sculpture and architecture on display is extraordinary, as is the array of restaurants. Our Kirker Guide Notes will help you find some of the best and most atmospheric ones, many of which are off the beaten tourist track.

This newly restored hotel has a magical location on the delightful via Margutta, the famous street that runs between the bottom of the Spanish Steps and the Piazza del Popolo and which is renowned for its antique shops (and close proximity to the via Condotti).
The villa was built in 1580 by Cardinal Carafa who chose the site for its tranquillity and its wonderful views of the city. Much of the original decoration has been restored and the public rooms are spectacular, with vaulted ceilings and intricate frescoes. At the top of the Spanish Steps, Sir Rocco’s new Roman hotel has 104 rooms with views over the rooftops of Rome. Interiors are inspired by the era of the Grand Tour, and designed by Olga Polizzi in collaboration with Italian designer Tommaso Ziffer.
