In the Middle Ages, Bruges was one of the richest cities in northern Europe. But it was bypassed by the industrial revolution; the result is a mediaeval masterpiece with cobbled streets, guild houses, palaces and stone bridges over hidden canals. In our unique Kirker Guide Notes we recommend some of the city’s best restaurants. A selection of the finest examples of Flemish art can be found in the city as well as treasures from all over Europe. The richly detailed canvasses by Van Eyck and Memling can be seen at the Groeninge Museum and Michelangelo’s moving and inspiring Madonna with Child at the Church of Our Lady are just a few of its treasures.

Formerly the residence of the Dukes of Burgundy, this 15th century castle was the first five star hotel in Bruges. It has been meticulously restored conserving many unique features including a charming private chapel in the turret of the palace and opened in May 2008.
On entering this luxurious hotel you are immediately instilled with a feeling of calm – its large elegant lounges are decorated in a classic style with ornate furniture and grand chandeliers.
A 15th century patrician townhouse owned and run by the Hessels family, the Die Swaene, with its excellent canal-side location in the heart of the city, is one of the most beautiful properties in Bruges.
Our tour to these three great Flemish art cities was inspired by the long awaited reopening of Antwerp’s Royal Museum of Fine Arts (KMSKA) in September 2022, and while this wonderful museum may be the highlight of the tour for many, the mediaeval charm of Bruges and Van Eyck’s masterpiece ‘The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb’ in Ghent are not to be overlooked.
