Cultural Highlights
An enchanting palace and gardens on a site with over a millennium of history, the Royal Alcazar of Seville is a highlight for those visiting the city. Its varied history is reflected in its appearance, with many restorations taking place over the centuries.
Originally built as an Islamic citadel in the 10th century, the most intricate work was carried out in the 13th and 14th centuries, becoming richly decorated in mudejar style. Mudejar refers to the architectural hybrid between Gothic and Islamic styles, prevalent in Spain between the 12th and 15th centuries. It stems from the Arabic ‘mudajjan’ literally translating to ‘allowed to stay’. Visually, mudejar is described as an Islamic reinterpretation of traditional European styles, using brick as the main material to create intricate patterns in the building’s design, sometimes incorporating Catholic symbols. A prime example of the mudejar style can be observed in the Alcazar's Hall of Justice.
Notable Gothic and Renaissance influence can be observed in the Gothic Palace, a section of the palace with a Catholic altar depicting the Virgin of Antiquity as its centrepiece. Further highlights of the palace include its Hall of Ambassadors featuring an impressive, cedar wood dome on its ceiling, along with the well-known Courtyard of Maidens that displays a skilful integration of a Castilian palace with the privacy of Islamic design.
In addition to the palace’s impressive architecture, its vibrant gardens are a must-see, with over 20,000 plants of 187 different species. There are a selection of carefully designed gardens, adorned with tiles and water features that reflect its Moorish character.
