Kirker Holidays

Alte Pinakothek, Munich
26 November 2024 to 16 March 2025

The Alte Pinakothek is one of the oldest art galleries in the world, located in the Kunstareal art district of Munich. Until 16 March it is holding the first solo exhibition of Rachel Ruysch (1664-1750), a leading female artist of the Dutch Golden age. Ruysch’s paintings are characterised by her playful, often asymmetrical floral compositions, the brilliant hues of the flowers contrasting with dark, atmospheric backgrounds. As the daughter of renowned scientist Frederiki Ruysch, Rachel grew up immersed in specimens of plants, which she studied meticulously as she learned to draw. At 15 she began an apprenticeship under Willem van Aelst, a prominent Dutch flower painter, where she mastered creating floral still life pictures. By age 18 she was independently producing and selling her works. During her career, she became the first female member of the artist’s society Confrerie Pictura, and 8 years later became the court painter in Düsseldorf. A celebrated artist during her lifetime, Ruysch’s reputation as a painter has endured throughout the centuries, but she is infrequently exhibited. This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to appreciate Ruysch’s fine works and learn about her intriguing life story.
