Mezquita de Córdoba

Cordoba, Spain
Kirker Holidays

Mezquita de Córdoba, also known as the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba, is the official Catholic Cathedral of the Diocese of Córdoba. Both spiritually captivating and historically rich, the Mosque-Cathedral exhibits a rare mix of Arabic and Western architectural beauty. It has been considered a UNESCO world heritage site since 1984.

The Mezquita is a grand structure formed of 850 pillars of jasper, onyx, marble and granite. A mosque first opened for prayer in 785, the Mezquita was periodically extended to eventually become a grand structure, its high ceilings and long rooms giving a sense of infinity to the space.

In amongst the traditional Islamic elements, is the juxtaposing Renaissance-baroque cathedral, created in the 16th century, strikingly adorned with a rich jasper and red marble screen behind the altar and carved mahogany choir stalls.
