Vienna, Austria
Kirker Holidays

Albertina, Vienna
7 March to 9 June 2025

Located within a 19th-century Habsburg palace in the Innere Stadt of Vienna, the Albertina museum is home to one of the world’s most impressive print rooms - with over 65,000 drawings and over 1 million old master prints. From 7 March to 9 June 2025, the museum holds a temporary exhibition of two of the most celebrated draftsmen in history: Leonardo da Vinci and Albrecht Dürer. Behind each Renaissance masterpiece are numerous preliminary drawings, often made on coloured ground using shades of light and dark. These drawings are crucial for establishing the most prominent areas of tonal contrast as well as creating atmosphere in paintings, a technique known as chiaroscuro in Italian (literally translating to light-dark). This exhibition explores the function of drawing on coloured ground and its links to contemporary printmaking through the work Leonardo and Dürer. The exhibition includes pieces from the Albertina’s own collections, in addition to top-class loans from international galleries, offering an extraordinary opportunity to view the drawings of these great Masters side by side.

The Albertina opening hours

The Albertina is open daily 10:00 - 18:00, with extended hours until 21:00 on Wednesday and Friday
