Ingres & Delacroix: Artists’ Objects
Musée National Eugène Delacroix, until 10 June 2024
Closed for renovations since September 2023, the charming former home of Romantic painter Eugène Delacroix reopened in March with a new exhibition exploring the relationship and rivalry between Ingres and Delacroix.
Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867) was a French Neoclassical painter, strictly adherent to traditional painting styles and resisting the growing Romantic style of the time. Eugène Delacroix (1798–1863) was a French Romantic artist, his work emphasising colour and movement rather than traditionally refined form.
The exhibition examines not only their work, and the contrasting styles and influences of the two artists, but also their personal possessions from Greek vases to musical instruments. Through observing the artists’ personal objects we gain a glimpse into their personal tastes, fostering a more intimate understanding of the artists’ lives and their creative processes.
The exhibition moves to the Musée Ingres Bourdelle near Toulouse, from 12 July to 10 November 2024.
