Cultural Highlights
Museum Barberini, Potsdam
8 February to 18 May 2025
Twenty minutes from Berlin city centre is the charming historic town of Potsdam, home to the palaces of the Prussian kings. The Barberini Museum is housed in one of the most splendid of these Baroque mansions and opened in 2017 as an elegant and highly-enjoyable museum with a series of rotating exhibitions. This spring it features a remarkable collection of works by Kandinsky, focusing on the subject of Geometric Abstraction, a new visual language that emerged in the early 20th century. Challenging the conventional portrayal of realistic scenes and subjects in art, geometric abstraction uses shapes in different colours and sizes to compose abstract arrangements. Inspired by the advancing scientific discoveries of the time, these abstract works often explore complex theories such as the space-time continuum and the fourth dimension. Cosmos Kandinsky. Geometric abstraction in the 20th century offers insight into the evolution of this movement over the course of six decades, exhibiting over 100 artworks by 70 artists from the US and Europe, including works by Wassily Kandinsky whose theoretical foundations led the movement. This exhibition is a special opportunity to view a vast collection of geometric abstraction, as well as gain perspective into the social and historical contexts behind them.
Optional add-on
If you are visiting Berlin between 1 March and 15 June, you might also take in “The Cosmos of Der Blauer Reiter, from Kandinsky to Campendonk”, at the Kupferstichkabinett, the world-class museum of prints and drawings in the city centre. The ‘Der Blaue Reiter’ (The Blue Rider) were a network of German expressionists led by Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Marc and Gabriele Münter. Pioneers of 20th century modern art, this group paved the way for the freedom of form and colour that characterises expressionism. The exhibition showcases 60 watercolours, drawings and prints along with 20 comparable works by other female artists.
The Barberini Museum opening hours
The Barberini Museum is open from Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00 - 19:00. Closed Monday & Tuesday.
