The Alhambra is an Islamic palace and fortress, with its surrounding gardens known as the Generalife, located in Granada, Andalucia. ‘Alhambra’ derives from Arabic, meaning ‘the red one’, thought to be a reference to its red-toned outer walls. Built in 1238, it is one of the best-preserved monuments of the historic Islamic world as well as a celebrated masterpiece of Islamic architecture. Visitors can explore its spectacular palaces, gardens, public baths and its Mosque.

During the Nasrid era of Granada, when the Alhambra was first built, it was a secluded citadel, independent from the rest of Granada. It contained all the necessities of an Islamic city, including roads, houses and workshops, and six royal palaces and a mosque. The Alhambra existed as an Islamic citadel until 1492, when the Islamic rule of Spain was overthrown by Catholicism. Following this, the Alhambra went through many changes and was abandoned starting from the 18th century, before undergoing a series of restorations beginning in the 19th century. It is now considered a UNESCO world-heritage site and is a cherished site of Islamic architecture and history.

The Nasrid Palaces, dating from the 13th and 14th centuries, are the main attraction of the Alhambra. Among the Alhambra’s palaces, the Nasrid Palaces are the best preserved, ingeniously designed to allow light to flow through the rooms and patios. The famous Court of the Lions, with water channelled through the mouths of 12 lions at its centre and flanked by halls with exquisitely carved domes, has been refurbished and now gleams; the Court of Myrtles, backed by spectacularly crafted Moorish arches, has a rectangular pond edged by marble paving and myrtle hedges.

Entrance Fees

It is essential to book a time slot for entrance to the Nasrid Palace as visitor numbers are strictly controlled and these tickets sell out well in advance. Tickets are included as part of the Granada Card for all Kirker clients visiting Granada - this includes the palaces and gardens as well as entrance to Granada Cathedral, the Royal Chapel, Monasteries of La Cartuja and San Geronimo and the Museum of Andalucia.
