The Gallerie dell’Accademia (by the Accademia Bridge, Vaporetto stop: Accademia) is known as The National Gallery of Venice, and was designed to bring together the finest works of Venetian painting from across the city. It houses Venetian paintings from the 14th to 18th centuries, arranged in a generally chronological order from the Byzantine to the Gothic and the Venetian Renaissance.

The collection comprises more than 800 works of art including Titian’s ‘La Pieta’, a number of Bellini masterpieces, including his altarpiece which is displayed in the former church and ‘Procession in Piazza San Marco’, which shows a view of the square before its transformation in the 16th century. There are also masterpieces by artists including Bellotto, Canaletto, Carpaccio, Guardi, Giorgione, Mantegna, Tiepolo, Tintoretto and Veronese. Perhaps the most famous work is Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man, although this is considered too delicate to display for visitors, except on very rare occasions.

Start on the 1st floor where the majority of the most important works are kept and allow at least a couple of hours for your visit, and the Kirker Concierge recommends arriving either at opening time or later in the afternoon in order to avoid the crowds.
